So tonight I finally got to reunite with my high school besties. We went to Rockefeller Center to see the tree (yes better late than never) and out to a nothing-special restaurant (more on that later)
Here we are at Rockefeller:
Me and My Girl Bestie Vicky
Me and my Boy Bestie Jeff
My Girls (Me, Mia (jeff’s GF) and Vicky)
My new northface makes me look very oompa loompa-ish lol…but it was nice and toasty 😀
Jeff was the only guy tonight since our other bestie also named Jeff (yes it gets a bit confusing) is off in warm Palm Beach (so jellin with jealousy!). Pobre Jeff was dragged all around NYC as we girls shopped it up in SAKS, JCrew etc. 😀
We then hit up times square looking for some eats and to get out of the windy freezing cold!! We settled on a restaurant called My Most Favorite Food (MMFF)– a kosher restaurant cafe. The decor was cute and typical NY. It was a modern glass dining area with an upstairs and a bakery in the corner for those looking for a quick bite.
We started off with a yumtastic bread basket.
When it comes to eating bread baskets and my dairy allergy, if its not garlic bread or covered in butter and its just plain baked loaves, I let it slide and just eat it a little bit and pray that I don’t get sick :D. I ate a a slice of wheat grainy bread.
It was perfection. Crusty outside and doughy inside- bready deliciousness. I went back for a slice of the dark sweet bread because i just couldn’t resist 😀
When it came to ordering my actual meal however, I told the waiter about my dairy intolerance and he was very quick to help guide me through the menu. I love when waiters know about the food and don’t look confused and have to go ask the chef which always takes forever!
I decided to order two sides instead of an entree since none of their pairings really appealed to me.
Contorni– grilled eggplant, zucchni and roasted red peppers with EVOO and torn mint
It was bland and really had no taste. Basically two thin slices of zucchini and two thin slices of egg plant thrown on a plate topped with a piece of pepper and drizzled with EVOO and garnished with a mint leaf. The small portion was $13 and for the same amount of money I could have made about a gajillion of these at home.
Caramelized Onion and Mushroom Quinoa
It was eh. The taste was again bland. It tasted like classic quinoa from a box. I had to add a bunch of salt and pepper to this which is a BIG INDICATOR to me that a dish isn’t good. I think that you should never really have to use extra seasonings on the table if the dish is prepared correctly. At $10, the portion size was pretty good for NY standards- a basic size cereal bowl.
I still ended up cleaning my plate despite its mediocrity because I was pretty hungry and it didn’t taste bad, just ordinary and plain.
I was hoping that dessert would save the place after all for a cafe, its known for its bakery and cakes. I’ve been craving a good dessert especially since I couldn’t have any of the pies at Christmas. Without even asking, the waiter was kind and remembered my dairy allergy and immediately after giving us the dessert menus told me which ones were dairy free 😀 The menu online also shows which cakes have dairy and which are pareve. (Pareve is a Judaic term meaning that it is not prepared with meat, milk or their derivatives)
I went with the Walnut Torte-Alternating layers of genoise, mocha creme and walnut nougat
Again, it was nothing special. For a place known for its desserts I was really expecting a dessert-gasm, but not even a blip. It tasted like something out of an Entemann’s box (actually ive had some amazingly food-gasms from Entemann’s back when I could eat dairy…) At $9 a slice, it was a fairly decent size but I rather have had a bite of foodporn than a large slice of meh…The walnuts were pretty good and it had a tart taste and wasn’t overly sweet. Definitely did not satisfy my dessert cravings 😦
Stuffed with blah food (my dining companions thought their food was ok- Jeff and Mia both had Pizza Margherita and a Caesar Salad which they said was pretty phenom, and Vicky had Whole Wheat Spaghetti) , we walked around times square but after a lot of bumping and grinding with random strangers, we decided to call it a night and we headed home.
Not a very successful foodie night but I had an amazing time catching up with old friends. They plan on coming to visit me in MI sometime this semester along with the other Jeff so I can’t wait!!
Heres some more pictures of my gorgeous besties since the food porn was such a bust:
